I chose individual classes when I was pregnant and feeling some pain and discomfort in my pelvis. It helped me prevent the pain worsening towards the end of my pregnancy by maintaining some core stability. Following the birth of my daughter, I was still suffering from weakness in my abdominals due to the muscles separating quite significantly. The classes have helped to reduce this separation and increase the tone in my stomach muscles.

The classes are tailored to the want/need of its members, targeting different areas specifically so benefiting everyone appropriately. The grading of exercises allows everyone to be able to get maximum benefit without pushing too much..... Unless you want to of course.

My stomach muscles are resuming to more normal strength and tone. My flexibility is increasing gradually which is great for encouraging me to continue with the classes.

Cath is particularly approachable as a teacher and is always able to reply to emails or phone calls if needed – with a sense of humour!! This is a rare quality and we are lucky to have found her.

Cath was recommended to me. The studio has an intimate and personal appeal for small classes.

I have always had a lower back problem. Cath has paid particular attention to this in the exercise routine. My strength has improved lots.

It has increased my strength and flexibility: movement has improved lots.

Cath has always listened to particular problems and has reassessed the exercise routine to suit any ailments.
She also makes the class fun and very enjoyable.

I have problems with my back (disc issues) any other pilates I have tried has been too strenuous and ended up in more pain.

I had a prolapsed disc L4/L5 late 90's needed surgery but ended up not having the operation. Can't do any impact sports like running, football etc. Have slipped disc like symptons, these can be acute aound once or twice a year through to stiffness and mobility issues.

I have been with Cath for 7 years with a small gap in the middle. The gap was due to thinking I was better but after a year the symptoms returned. I realised that at least some pilates and exercise is required. I mountain bike, road bike and also fell walk. All these help my back and pilates reminds me to work my core, stretch and be as flexible as possible.

The increase in core strength, more from the laughing than the exercises, the group sessions are really good fun as well as the benefit from the exercises!

When I started PilatesI wanted to maintain fitness and mobility as the years progress.

I didn't have any concerns at all about working with you or Pilates.

I'm finding the classes very enjoyable and beneficial,  your classes are informative, as to how the muscles and the body work and to enjoy the benefits of Pilates.

The best thing about working with you is that I now have better posture and flexibility of muscles and body.

Cath has small size classes, so you can get individual attention. Cath always adapts exercises to each person if you need it. She takes pity on my aching knees to modify, so I can still take part.

I wanted to add to my attempt to be fitter. My job at the time was very desk based and could involve a lot of driving. This could cause sciatica. Since then I've had knee trouble too.

Sciatica is almost totally gone - unless I miss class and don't do some homework.
My knees are a work in progress, but I am sure the classes are keeping any further deterioration at bay for now.

I've met a lovely bunch of class mates and have a real stress busting giggle at class, while doing exercises that I know make me feel better. I wouldn't have kept coming for +2 years if it wasn't a great class. Repeat business and long term clients is what it's all about with Cath.

I also love the change of focus for each term / block of classess.

Veronica - Hip Repalcement (both sides) & neck pain

Small Group Mat

Having bad posture, stiffness of my neck and painful hip joint.

I found the bands strengthened my whole body, both the blue and purple ones.

I am conscious of my posture and find myself correcting it if I have a bad stance. Greater movement in my neck. Much more strength i.e. I can get up from a kneeling down position without having to hold on to something. My lifting capability has improved. Pelvic floor muscles have definitely improved.

Cath is an excellent teacher who makes what could be a drudge into an enjoyable experience. Any problem area, Cath will try to address and incorporate suitable exercises into class for the best benefit of all.

Sheila - Chronic and widespread pain

Specialist Pain Class at S.M.I.L.E

Our Pilates classes began when Cath was asked to come once a month to our S.M.I.L.E pain clinic, which covers many disabilities for each person, I have pains from my back etc and very personal problems that my disabilities have caused.

Pilates sessions are very enjoyable as a group, one it encourages us to do our best, with Cath's teachings and encouragement, also carrying out our Pilates moves taught, that bring out the good feel factor, plus a big boast to Cath to see her teaching of Pilates is successful to us all.

More gentle flexibility which gives us confidence to keep us trying. In our group, it’s the none stop laughter backed by never ending personal advice from Cath to overcome any problem, body wise, Cath in S.M.I.L.E Group we are all that much more uplifted by your teachings of Cath Hopkinson Pilates Skills.

Cath while your Pilates classes are 100%, the sense of humour you bring to them is very uplifting, while taking NOTHING away from your teachings. Good luck Cath in your future plans, it’s a very old but true saying, “you only get out of life, what you put in!

Helen - Whiplash & Back Spasms

Small Group Mat

I recently had a neck injury – along with a lot of spasms in my neck I also got a lot of stiffness and pain in my shoulders and spine. My physio recommended Pilates.
Appropriate exercises with hands on tuition and technique have been the best for me. However the Pilates by Numbers have been a good homework booklet for me too.

I’ve benefited tons since starting Pilates. By only the third week after I began, I found my neck muscles had started to strengthen, my shoulders relax and the pain lessoned. Over the past three months I can now move and lift my head and neck pain free and easily, unlike before Pilates.

Pilates has been the best possible thing for my neck, shoulders and re – alignment of my spine. I found Cath  wonderful in the classes, giving me specific advice and moves during and out of classes to aid my road to recovery! Their help has (and Pilates in its self) allowed me to get my life back to how it was before my accident so speedily!! It’s also been a fun and uplifting evening once a week too.

When I met Cath I was fairly new to retirement from a busy, stressful career and still in the process of readjusting to my life. It was important to me to look at how to maintain and improve my fitness and health appropriate to my age and ability

Before starting I had no experience of exercise classes at all, so felt like a total novice. It was the fear of the unknown.

Working with Cath has been enlightening, supportive and motivational. She has encouraged me to see Pilates as an integral part of my life.

I can see a huge improvement in my body shape and flexibility and the process has been enjoyable and entertaining!

Mel - Back Pain (but not anymore!)

Studio Appataus and Small Group Mat

I have always loved exercise. However, I never had any strength in my stomach; also I suffered from a bad back. I heard Pilates was excellent for then, the one day Cath’s leaflet came through my door, and I have never looked back!

I didn’t have any reservations before working with Cath. As soon as I spoke to Cath over the phone I felt welcomed, part of the family. Then I went to my first class; Cath welcomed me on into the group as part of the family.

Working with Cath has been excellent. Cath looks at everyone’s needs and abilities. Since going to Cath’s class I have lost a dress size, I can complete Pilates sit-ups which I could never do. My back is brilliant now - thanks Cath!

One best thing about working with Cath – there are so many: Losing a dress size, gaining strength in my inner core, not suffering from backache, always looking forward to the class on a Wednesday night.

I first met you at a taster day at Alston Hall.

You inspired me to join your class, firstly at Great Eccleston and then Longridge

I was unsure how I would adapt to a different style of teaching having been to a different class previously.

The class is fun and challenging. I have learnt how to keep ”a more mature body” active

I have an intermittent problem with my knee. Pilates with Cath has helped me manage it and enabled me to have less or no pain.

I wanted to tone up my core muscles that help me to cough and also to improve my posture.

All of the exercises are helpful in some way or another – I really appreciate the alternative moves for when I have pulled muscles.

I can cough for longer! Which helps my chest condition and I am more aware of what I need to do on a regular basis to help improve my posture.

Having a laugh whilst exercising help too!

Sheila H - Chronic Pain
S.M.I.L.E Group

I suffer with arthritis and am a member of S.M.I.L.E. I attend their classes each time to help me relieve some of the pain and stress that I have to deal with everyday.

I benefit from all exercises because having limited movement in all joint, doing all to achieve the exercise id definitely beneficial.

The exercises I have learnt I do at home and this helps to give me more flexibility and a feeling of success.

When one is in constant pain this affects all aspects. I have found smile a very helpful and successful society and the Pilates exercises are something to look forward to and one of the most important aspects is being able to laugh and enjoy it. When one is laughing you forget your pain and that is important.

Derek B - Chronic Pain

Thank you very much for your invaluable advice and instruction which has demonstrated the effectiveness of expertly taught Pilates.

I hope you appreciate the difference you have made.

(Attended sessions due to chronic neck/shoulder pain and within 3 months had considerably more movement and less pain than she had had for the previous 5 years).

Anne, Darwen - Private Pilates

Cath has been my personal trainer and I can honestly say that she never seems to run out of ideas! I always feel like I’ve had a good work-out when she visits and she doesn’t let me get away with any cheating!

Cath has kept me motivated to maintain and progress my level of fitness over a sustained period and her enthusiasm and creativity in devising new methods of torture know no bounds!

Anne Topping - Private Pilates

Pilates, to me, had always been a mind numbing experience, where I spent the hour of my weekly class, watching the clock, willing the session to end and trying to convince myself that it was doing me good!

I decided to give it one last try before abandoning it for ever and arranged one-to-one sessions with Cath Hopkinson. From day one, I didn’t even think about looking at the time, as Cath kept my interest throughout the hour each week. We started with the basics and I found that I was actually doing exercises that were part of Pilates, as routines in my daily life. We have now moved on to all kinds of interesting moves, using different pieces of equipment.

The best bit is that when I get something wrong, there is no feeling of “being admonished by the teacher” but being allowed to break the tension by laughing about the mistake and trying again.

I have to be honest that I really enjoy the weekly sessions – something that I didn’t believe would ever be the case!"

Janet has been a regular devotee of Pilates for the last 6 months and who sucessfully completed a 2-week cycle challenge around Cuba. Well done!!

Recommended by physio following childbirth in order to develop core stability and carry out correct abdominal exercises needed for posture and body shape.

Definitely appropriate exercises and ability to ask and be shown when necessary. Understanding of Cath of rectus split and need to tackle some exercises differently (always giving alternatives). Also the email and phone support and general down to earth and real lives attitude.

Advice meant that I returned to GP and received further corrective physio and advice. Phone and email support makes me feel someone cares, and encourages me to motivate myself to attend (which isn’t always easy).

Like how the class is developing further and branching out to encompass related areas. Hope I can access many of them in the future.
